18 Cities And Towns That Are Already Freaking Out About The Sequester

As President Barack Obama and Congressional Republicans trade barbs over the looming sequester, towns and cities are starting to brace for the potentially devastating consequences that the cuts will have at the local level.

Public schools in New York City, the Department of Agriculture’s meat inspection program, and various military bases across the country could all be affected.

We took a look at 19 local newspapers that made the sequester a focus on their front pages Friday.

Poll: Public opposes sequester cuts to individual programs

A new poll finds a majority opposes spending cuts for most government programs, including defense and entitlements.  According to a Pew Research poll released Friday, a majority supports either increasing spending or keeping spending at current levels for 18 of the 19 federal programs surveyed.

The poll was issued a week before $85 billion in cuts are set to begin hitting the government on March 1. The most popular programs are veteran’s benefits, as 91 percent say it should be increased or maintained. Eighty-seven percent support keeping Social Security spending at current levels or increasing it, while 89 percent favor increased or current spending for education.

The New York Times Calls (again) for Higher Taxes on Middle-Class Americans

All statists want much bigger government, but not all of them are honest about how to finance a Greek-sized welfare state. The President, for instance, wants us to believe that the rich are some sort of fiscal pinata, capable of generating endless amounts of tax revenue. Using IRS tax data, I’ve shown that this is a very inaccurate assumption. And I’ve also used IRS data to show the President that there are big Laffer-Curve effects when you try to rape and pillage high-income Americans.

Heck, even the Europeans have realized that you can only squeeze so much blood from that stone. Notwithstanding the misleading rhetoric from the Obama Administration, there are some honest folks on the left who understand and acknowledge that you can’t have bigger government unless you put ordinary people on the chopping block.
